It's become evident in my mood, my body and my vibe. I haven't been smiling much and feeling tired often. My energy hasn't been productive or positive. I think it's possible for us to not feel happy all of the time and that's okay.

Whether it be a job, living situation, relationship or even friendship we have to maintain some sense of balance. I gained momentum in my career and personal life only to realize I forgot to put myself first. As said by the late, Maya Angelou "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude." So when I woke up unhappy, I decided to take steps to overcome it. Here are five mindful tips to take care of you:

1. Talk it Out

I am not the best at expressing feelings or social interactions, but I'm learning that you need people. That is why relationships are so important. I once heard "It's okay to throw yourself a pity party, just don't stay for long," thanks Kid Fury. My self care was interrupted by depression and not in the extreme sense. People tend to think of depression as a massive emotional explosion, but I definitely think we're all guilty of just being down. The daily conversations I find myself having with God have helped me most. Seek out your God, Universe or higher power to remind you to stay centered. The little things that bothered me don't anymore and I'm so glad for that.

2. Disconnect

We allow ourselves to be so in tune with the world and out of our mind. We live in a society where we consume so much media daily and often times it can be a bit toxic. I used to wake up to my alarm only to catch up with the latest social trends. I would repeat this at night, too. I realized that in order for me to be present, I needed to unplug and tune it out. I was offline on social media for a bit, but would still tweet or post a photo every now and then. Now my mornings are spent enjoying the sunrise.

3. Eat Healthy

I moved out recently and our stove was broken for a while. This lead to me eating out every meal for four days straight, literally. Not only was this bad for my pockets, but horrible to my waistline too. What you consume affects you internally and externally. I was sluggish, lazy and generally not happy. Now that I'm getting back into the habit of working out and being mindful of what I eat, I am seeing amazing results.

4. Create a Playlist

I've been listening to Spotify's recent collab with HeyFranHey and am in love. It's the perfect blend of alternative jams + feel good vibes. I've always enjoyed reading her website, which is full of light by the way. There's something so calming about sound to me, but sometimes I try to share it all. Music just puts me in my zone, always has. So turn on your favorite playlist and relax.

5. Beautify

With exhaustion brings about laziness. My body has been feeling stressed, which began to show in the way I took care of myself or lack of. Now that I'm older it seems I have to schedule me time. A simple mani pedi after a hot shower is the best feeling in the world. It's just so relaxing. Normally, I'll wash my hair with my favorite products, air dry and begin to pamper myself.

So remember when you're feeling down, don't allow what's going on in the world to destroy your peace.
